Essential Skills that Employers are looking for...part 1

Essential Skills that Employers are looking for

From the website theheadhunters.ca by Renee Luk a series of seven short articles on essential skills that employers are looking for.

Are you hoping to land that perfect job just out of college, or are you about to begin your search for new employment after years in the same job?

If so, take a look at these essential skills employers are looking for in top candidates:

A deep awareness and understanding of your particular field
Learn as much as you can about each company you interview with. You’ll impress interviewers by showing that you have done your homework and can present yourself as a candidate who will be able to solve that company’s problems in concrete, clearly explained ways.
In addition, get and stay in touch with professionals in your chosen field; network with and utilize their knowledge. They can point you to resources that will help you learn more about and keep abreast of changes in your industry in a realistic, practical sense. This first of the essential skills is also one that you will continually need to revise as changes in your industry occur.

Applying for a Record Suspension?

A record suspension removes a person's criminal record from the Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC) database. This means that a search of CPIC will not show that you have a criminal record or a record suspension.
You can apply for a record suspension if you have completed your sentence and demonstrated that you are a law-abiding citizen for a certain number of years (5 years for summary offences and 10 years for indictable offences). If you submit an application and have met all of the Canada Parole Board requirements, you will be granted a record suspension, which means your criminal record will be kept separate and apart from other criminal records.
Applying for a record suspension may benefit you if you are currently looking for employment or educational opportunities and have found your criminal record to be an obstacle.
You cannot apply for a record suspension if you have been convicted of a sexual offence involving a child (Schedule 1 Offence), or if you have been convicted of more than 3 offences and were sentenced to serve 2 years or more in jail for each offence.
TO APPLY: You can apply for a record suspension once you have completed all sentences and probationary periods, paid all fines associated with convictions, AND waited 5 years for summary offences and 10 years for indictable offences.
The application process costs $631 plus any fingerprinting, criminal record, court documents, or police record check fees. You can phone 1-800-874-2652 to request a copy of the application, or get one online at: http://www.pbc-clcc.gc.ca/prdons/pardon-eng.shtml
Please know that you can apply for this yourself! You do not need to use a service that submits the application for you, as this may cost you more money and will not guarantee that you get a record suspension or faster processing. YOU can apply directly to the Parole Board of Canada for a record suspension – they treat all applications the same.
For more information, or help with your application, contact the Parole Board of Canada:
