Reasons for Rejecting Job Applicants (Part One)

About fifty people apply for every job.  Five people are interviewed.  One person is hired.  So forty-nine of fifty job applicants are rejected.

Employers have any number of reasons for rejecting job applicants.  Based on reports form Personnel and Human Resources Offices of 153 companies, in no particular order, here are ten:

  1. Poor personal appearance.
  2. Overaggressive, conceited, "know it all'.
  3. Poor voice, diction, grammar, inability to express oneself.
  4. No purpose and goals for vocation - lack of life planning.
  5. Lack of interest and enthusiasm - passive, indifferent.
  6. Lack of confidence and poise - nervous, ill at ease.
  7. Too much emphasis on money - interested only in best salary offered.
  8. Poor or borderline academic achievements.
  9. Unwilling to start at the bottom - expects too much too soon.
  10. Makes excuses, reluctant to talk about unfavourable things in his/her work and academic record.
