Many key sectors of the Canadian economy have job openings, but no people to fill them. There are 25 occupations with a future, according to a report by CIBC.
“CIBC’s deputy chief economist Benjamin Tal indicated, "We have people without jobs and jobs without people ."
Mining, health care and engineering top the list of sectors that desperately need qualified candidates, while teaching, hospitality and manufacturing have too few openings for those already trained to work there.
“You have an army of over-qualified people in Canada,” Tal said. “Many people have an advanced degree in fields that are not exactly in demand.”
The report includes two lists: 25 occupations with labour shortages and 20 with labour surpluses. You could argue, the report is a "Coles notes" version to planning your future.
My advise to job seekers, especially those entering their careers is to pay attention to the lists and plan accordingly.
