Dealing with Rejection

Sometimes in the job search, we will hear “no”.  How do you handle rejection?  This is how Lou Tice of the Pacific Institute sees it…

Winner's Circle Network with Lou Tice - 4/4/11 - "Dealing with Rejection"

How good are you at handling rejection? If your answer is, "Not good at all," or "Not very," you will want to pay special attention to the following.

One of the most powerful words in any language is the word that means, "No." Most adults can't handle hearing it, and as a result of their fear of "No," they limit themselves in just about every way I can think of. How many times have you wanted to talk to someone, but decided not to do it because they might not respond positively? How many jobs have you not tried for because you were afraid they wouldn't hire you? How many times have you kept yourself from growing because you believed you might fail?

All of these self-created limits are the result of fear of rejection - fear of the little word, "No."

But there are no real successes without rejection. Ask anyone, who has ever succeeded in life, how many times they failed, how many times someone said, "No way" to them, and how many times they kept right on going. You see, the more rejection you encounter, the stronger you become - if you're on the road to success. You look at setbacks as temporary and you bounce back every time you take a hit.
So next time you run into the big, fat, roadblock known as, "No," ask yourself: "What can I learn from this?" You will move further forward if you can refrain from telling yourself it's time to quit.

Saskatchewan Writers’ Guild - Workshop Instructor Needed

I recently heard about another summer job.  See below.....

Saskatchewan Writers’ Guild - Workshop Instructor Needed

In partnership with the Saskatchewan Native Theatre Company (SNTC), the SWG is seeking an emerging writer to act as a co-instructor for Bringing Back the Buffalo: Stories from the Core. This workshop takes place from August 20th-- 24th, and will require an additional five hours of e-mail correspondence from August 27th—31st.

We are looking for a writer to facilitate a five day workshop for youth.  Aboriginal applicants will be given preference. The successful applicant should be entering his/her writing career and looking to further develop his/her skills. In addition to acting as a co-instructor to a more established writer, the emerging writer will have the opportunity to learn from and be mentored by the other instructor. The successful applicant will have been published, but an extensive literary resume is not required.

You will be spending five days with a group of ten to fifteen Aboriginal youth aged 13 – 19.  You will be teaching youth the principles of creative writing. The outcome of this workshop will be a public reading at the SNTC, where participants will invite their friends and families to watch as they perform their writing projects.

Effective Cold Calling

Statistics indicate 80% of job vacancies are not advertised.  Networking and cold calling are excellent approaches to accessing these job opportunities.  If a friend informs you of a job opportunity it can be a lead that will get you the job offer.

When making job applications, individuals often ask me how to get past reception as often reception people are seen as the gate keeper.  I encourage individuals to use reception staff to their advantage.  Although reception staff are gatekeepers they also have a direct communication line to managers.  Dropping off your resume at unusual times like late in the afternoon when the work day is winding down or dropping off your resume on a Friday afternoon or even a Friday afternoon of a long weekend can serve you well.   Being prepared to deal with the receptionist only, and not asking for a manager can show that you trust the receptionists ability to get your application to the right person.  Thanking the receptionist for her time and expertise, calling back to say that you met her/him last Friday and you are wondering if the receptionist requires any further information about your skills and abilities reinforces your confidence in her role.  Reception staff are often a strong communication link of the business; so utilizing this person to your advantage can make all the difference in your job search success.

Entrepreneurship vs. Employment

Some people choose to create their own job by starting a small business; these people are called entrepreneurs.  If you are interested in being an entrepreneur, you should consider the following three things:

CHARACTER:  Do you have the interests, skills, characteristics and values necessary to succeed?   Are you a self-starter? Can you manage your time? Are you organized?
OPPORTUNITY:  Does the market need what you are selling?  Are they willing to pay for it?
RESOURCES:   Do you know how to star your own business?  What financial resources do you have?  What are your strengths (and weaknesses)?

In Saskatoon the following organizations are dedicated to assisting you to determine if you should be an entrepreneur.  If appropriate, they will also assist you in developing a plan to start your own small business:
  • Women Entrepreneurs of Saskatchewan Inc. (306) 477-7173
  • Praxis School for Entrepreneurship (306) 664-0500
  • Wilson Centre for Entrepreneurial Excellence (306) 966-8675
  • Entrepreneurs with Disabilities Program (306) 665-5508.

Looking for Summer Work...or Workers?

After attending the 2012 Contact Conference in Saskatoon I reflected on all the fantastic sessions for Career Practitioners, the vibrant keynote speakers and the networking opportunities that took place. Several agencies had display booths set up and as I was perusing I came to a table with three young women, likely the youngest people at the conference.  Looking just as professional as all the rest, they brought their own unique flare to the promotion of their product…a new tool especially for youth, TEENWORK.CA. Their take-away gifts, packs of gum cleverly branded, encouraging job seeking youth and employee seeking businesses to ‘chewse’ the site for their needs.

The founder, Evelyn Morett, graduated from High School in 2011. Stephanie Lord and Chrissie Czaikowski have been driving the progress with Morett and the crew has expanded, recently adding Kurtis Gryba to the team. All four are Bishop James Mahoney graduates of 2011, a testament not only to networking, but to the entrepreneurial spirit.

So far the Saskatchewan based jobs are in Saskatoon, with postings for positions at summer camps around the province. Edmonton youth can check out the jobs for their area as well. The team already has close to 600 youth friendly listings and they continue to grow.

The appeal for youth: no searching through pages and pages of jobs that don’t apply, the search can be narrowed to factor in location within the city, and the mobile site it easy to use on the go. The appeal for employers: company profile page with logo, unlimited words to describe positions and of course a direct link to a hugely important resource – eager young workers.                              -CFJ
