Entrepreneurship vs. Employment

Some people choose to create their own job by starting a small business; these people are called entrepreneurs.  If you are interested in being an entrepreneur, you should consider the following three things:

CHARACTER:  Do you have the interests, skills, characteristics and values necessary to succeed?   Are you a self-starter? Can you manage your time? Are you organised?
OPPORTUNITY:  Does the market need what you are selling?  Are they willing to pay for it?
RESOURCES:   Do you know how to star your own business?  What financial resources do you have?  What are your strengths (and weaknesses)?

In Saskatoon the following organisations are dedicated to assisting you to determine if you should be an entrepreneur.  If appropriate, they will also assist you in developing a plan to start your own small business:
·         Women Entrepreneurs of Saskatchewan Inc. (306) 477-7173
·         Praxis School for Entrepreneurship (306) 664-0500
·         Wilson Centre for Entrepreneurial Excellence (306) 966-8675
·         Entrepreneurs with Disabilities Program (306) 665-5508.

A great Saskatoon example of an entrepreneur who turned his interest in building, entrepreneurship and new media is SHIFT Development's Curtis Olson, who is competing for the BDC Young Entrepreneur Award.  Curtis is the brains and creative force  behind Saskatoon's and 20th Street's... the 220 development, which is a flexible office space for the mobile workforce.  The 220 supplies start ups and creative entrepreneurs with world class technology and resources a along with flexible office space.
